How To Use Get Social For WordPress.com (social bookmark bar) [Windows]

[Get Social] Was created to use with your wordpress.com blog it’s a pretty nifty application very easy to use but I have seen a lot of question threads in the forum were the volunteers are still offering the old answer were you can copy this code that this other blogger made and modify it your self with the correct title and URL… And if your not familiar with coding then this option is not a good option…. When I write how to articles I like to offer tech savvy stuff written in a non tech savvy way I discovered get social about a month ago and I have to say that this application offers a solution for the non tech savvy bloggers…

About Get Social

Get Social is made especially for WordPress.com bloggers. It automatically generates a (specially designed) social bookmarking toolbar for each one of your posts. This is a 100% scriptless way to create social bookmarking links, which makes it a perfect solution for wordpress.com users. It is also based on a 3 step wizard interface which is very friendly and easy to use. Oh, and it’s 100% free! Source Link » Hillel

Note Get Social is for windows only & requires .Net Framework 2.0

How Do I download Get Social

After you download GetSocial (which is 100% Virus/Adware/Whatever free!), Extract and run GetSocial.exe (No Installation is needed, but you will need to have Microsoft .net framework 2.0 installed: nothing a quick visit to Windows Update won’t solve). Source Link » Hillel

Update I created a video tutorial for GetSocial also…

Update 2 GetSocial works with blogger (Blog Spot)

How To Add A Bookmark bar To Your Post

First you’ll want to write your post and publish it
so you have the permalink because you need this
link for the bookmark bar application…

Next you will want to open the Get Social applacation

Now you’ll want to check mark “add social bookmarking icons
to my new post then click next…

Ok now you will want to add your post title and post permalink
and you can achieve this after publishing your post byclicking
on the post title By clicking on the post title the permalink will
display in the address bar Then click next after filling out the
information – fields…. [Copy & Paste title & permalink]

Now check mark one the 4 bar designs you would like to
display in your post and click next…

Now you will see the code you’ll need to add the bookmarking
bar to your post click… [Send to clipboard] Then click Exit…

Ok next you’ll want to click edit post on your admin bar [ If
you don't see "edit post" then click the post title then
you see the "edit post" on the admin bar]

Ok now you should be able to see the post in edit mode click
the HTML tab then go to the bottom of the post press
enter twice
– then right click paste… Then click save and at
the top of editor you’ll see “go back” click it then go to the bottom
of the post and you should see the bookmark bar…

HOW DO I MAKE THE BOOKMARK APPLY TO JUST A POST AND NOT THE ENTIRE BLOG

Your directions are great – the social bookmark tool appears at the bottom of the post. However, when the user that is on my blog (http://shankarsaikia.wordpress.com/) clicks on the tool (e.g., user wants to share on Twitter) the user sees the entire blog.

I want each post to be shared so that the user, when clicking on the social bookmarking tool, is taken to the specific post.

Am I missing something? Is it possible to share specific posts or does the entire blog gets shared?

Here is the link to my blog (I wish it were the link to the specific post):

    http://twitter.com/home/?status=Software%3A%20No%20customer%20wants%20software!+%40+http%3A%2F%2Fshankarsaikia.wordpress.com

    Thanks.

      Hello, Shankar Saikia,

I noticed in the twitter share code you have is the blog’s home page url.
instead of the article link what you need to do after publishing the article you will need to grab the Perma link (Article Link)

I cut away the last 5 buttons of the classic bar, and kept my own twitter button. The newsvine button leads to an untrusted login page. http://groupieblog.wordpress.com/

I was successful getting the blog to link to my facebook personal profile page but not successful getting it to link to my fan page. I changed the url of http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php? to the url of my fan page but the post does not show up on the fan page. Is it possible to link to a fan page? Thanks

    • July 30, 2009 at 12:25 am | #14

Hello, michaelseaverjames it’ possible to link to a fan page but it won’t show the lastest updates by doing so.

I suggest checking out this article  How To Import Your Blog Content On Your Facebook Profile (Video Tutorial)

Thanks but that is still going to my personal profile and not to my fan page.

    • July 30, 2009 at 7:33 am | #16

I was suggesting that maybe you can set up the blog feed the same way you would on your personal profile. Sorry for not being clear about that.

I made it as far as getting it to my clipboard but now it won’t copy/paste from there. This is all new to me! Any suggestions on what I should do now?

You have been a terrific help, btw!

I actually got it to post under my post (yay) but when I tested it on Twitter and Facebook, it didn’t go to the posting (it said “page not found”)????

Love the greenstreet’s idea to add a LinkedIn choice!!

      Thanks again!!!

      • August 29, 2009 at 2:30 pm | #24

        Hello sandy,

but when I tested it on Twitter and Facebook, it didn’t go to the posting (it said “page not found”)????

I recommend opening the Get Social app and re inserting the Article Title and article link this should fix the issue.

For future reference for Get Social you have to have the article published first so you can grab the perma link (Article Link)

I suggest checking out this great alternative [Via Add To Any] for WP.com blogs

You Rock! It works!!!! My 2nd mistake was a typo on my part in the perma-link!

    THANKS!

    • August 29, 2009 at 5:11 pm | #26

You’re welcome! Sandy, Tip: for the day I usually just past the perma link so there’s no typos

Is there an equivalent Mac/cross platform application??

    • September 15, 2009 at 11:06 pm | #30

Hello Dave, Get social is only for the windows platform but I did find a web based service that works on all platforms that will correctly put the correct formatted code into your blog article with more sharing options than Get Social here is the article link  New Social Bookmark Solution For WordPress.com Blogs Via AddToAny

Great informative and easy-to-follow post. I was really struggling to add the StumbleUpon button, and this is an excellent substitute for WordPress.com blogs!
